Teas of Sri Lanka

Explore the island of Sri Lanka through its teas. Distinguish the distinctive characteristics between high and low-grown teas and understand the elements that influence the distinctive flavour leaves.

Overview

From colonial roots to global acclaim, Ceylon teas, as they are still known, have dominated the island landscape as well as its recent economic and social history. This unit offers a journey through Sri Lanka’s story of tea. You’ll learn about British colonial history on the island and the legacy of the plantation model – and how mountainous terrain and seasonal monsoons shape the production of one of the world’s most iconic tea industries. It provides insight into Sri Lanka’s sustainability challenges and how artisan estates are emerging, free from the traditional estate models.

The teas express the influence of each distinctive region. From Nuwara Eliya’s high-grown floral teas to Ruhuna’s bold, rich lowland teas, you’ll explore regional identity, plucking styles and processing methods.

Your learning is brought to life through tasting and evaluation of six representative Ceylon teas in a Live Tasting Tutorial guided by Sri Lankan Tea Specialist, James Suranga Perera.

Total Learning Time
A unit in World Tea Diploma typically takes around 10 – 12 hours to complete. That includes 2 hours in the Live Tasting Session. You won’t spend all the remaining time with the online content, it includes independent tasting and evaluation activities, making notes in your Tea Journal and a final multiple-choice quiz completes the unit. It’s a flexible qualification designed to fit around your schedule.

Qualification
Once passed, you’ll earn an OCN London digital badge demonstrating your understanding of these Teas of Sri Lanka.
