Through a representative selection of African teas, this unit explores the taste, history, style and social impact tea has had on this diverse continent.
African tea is much more than commodity CTC. This is a continent-spanning introduction, taking you from Kenya’s Rift Valley to the misty hills of Malawi, from early colonial estates to today’s cooperative-led and carbon-neutral gardens in Rwanda.You’ll discover the regions, histories and communities that make African tea distinctive.
Along the way, you’ll learn how altitude, climate, and soil influence flavour and how sustainable innovation is reshaping the future of production. You’ll also explore new developments: orthodox teas from Satemwa and purple tea from Kenya.
This unit give you the opportunity to join a live tasting tutorial with African Tea Specialist Khurush Bharucha, featuring the six teas sent to you. Recording your notes and taste preferences in the downloadable Tea Journal will help you connect the theory to the teas.
Total Learning Time
A unit in World Tea Diploma typically takes around 10 – 12 hours to complete. That includes 2 hours in the Live Tasting Session. You won’t spend all the remaining time with the online content, it includes independent tasting and evaluation activities, making notes in your Tea Journal and MCQs. It’s a flexible qualification designed to fit around your schedule.
On completion
At the end of the unit, you’ll complete a multiple-choice quiz. It will help to build an informed appreciation of African tea.

When you have passed the MCQs you’ll receive an OCN London digital badge to demonstrate your understanding of Teas of Africa.
