Every tea lover has a favourite teapot! Or maybe more than one favourite? Maybe you love them all? But where did the idea of steeping tea leaves in a squat, chummy, round-bodied pot come from?
Well, the story starts in China during the time of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) when the Chinese switched from whisking their tea into hot water in a bowl to steeping dried loose tea leaves in a pot. Small vessels with spouts and handles, that had been used for wine and water, found their way onto the tea table; and then, as other countries learnt to drink tea from the Chinese, those first pots evolved to suit different cultures. Hundreds of years later, teapots continue to charm, delight and fascinate tea drinkers.
Join Jane to learn more about the teapot’s journey from Yixing and China’s early porcelain works to tea tables all around the world. It will make your favourite pot seem even more special.
This Academy Extra webinar will be held on the Zoom platform, ending with time for questions.
